Plant, equipment and machinery

The term ‘plant’ refers mainly to machinery with moving parts that may cause injuries. However it also applies to gymnasium and sporting equipment, or items that are fundamental to the sport or recreation activity being carried out such as a glider, boat, go-kart or swimming pool.

Employers have a duty to provide training to workers on the safe use of any plant, equipment or machinery in the workplace.

Ways to control hazards

• Fit guards to plant with moving parts.
• Display operating instructions and safety information near plant.
• Regularly maintain plant, equipment and machinery in good working condition. Tag and do not use a faulty machine.
• Check that electrical equipment is safe to use.
• Provide or wear appropriate personal protective equipment for the sport or recreation being conducted at the workplace.
• Ensure any tractors have roll-over protective structures (ROPS) to prevent crushing of the driver if the tractor rolls
