Youth Training Incentives

Employing school-based apprentices or trainees is a smart way for employers to recruit and train workers to meet the future needs of your business.

Youth Training Incentives of up to $1100* are available for Queensland private sector employers when -

* (includes GST)

How to apply

Private sector employers do not have to apply for the incentive.

Eighteen months after the eligible school-based apprentice or trainee begins work, the Queensland Government sends the employer a claim form to complete and return, so their eligibility can be determined.

Funding guidelines

For detailed information on the funding process, please refer to the Youth Training Incentives Funding Guidelines (PDF, 505 KB).

Payment of the incentive

The $1,100* incentive is payable after eighteen (18) months of employment.  In the event the employee has completed school, the incentive will occur if the Training Contract has been continued or the individual is employed with that employer in some other capacity.  In these scenarios, the employee must be employed for a minimum of 15 hours per week.  The incentive will also be paid if the employee has completed their school-based apprenticeship or traineeship within eighteen months.

* (Includes GST)

Public sector employers

Local Government Authorities, Aboriginal Councils and Torres Strait Islander Councils can access Youth Training Incentives each financial year through a Memorandum of Agreement with the Queensland Government.

Benefits of the program

School-based apprenticeships and traineeships are a great path to employment.

Young people can study for their Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE), acquire government-approved and accredited training qualifications – and be paid while doing so.  When they finish, they will have their QCE or equivalent, and be well on the way towards a qualification in their chosen career.
